A transitional housing program in Rapid City in partnership with Family Promise of the Black Hills offers a secure and transformative environment for pregnant and parenting moms aged 18-24 experiencing homelessness.
Foundations is a group home setting warmly welcomes expectant mothers at any stage of their pregnancy or parenting journey, providing accommodation until their baby reaches one year of age. The program, centered around the individual, is customized to meet each mother's needs at her current life stage. Foundations aims to address the unique needs of each mother and support their journey towards self-sufficiency and independent living.
A study conducted by Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago revealed that pregnant and parenting youth face a 200% higher risk of experiencing homelessness. This alarming statistic sheds light on the challenges faced by young mothers who are homeless, many of whom are escaping domestic violence situations. These young mothers often find themselves in a heartbreaking dilemma: either leave their abuser and risk homelessness or stay in an abusive environment to have a roof over their heads for themselves and their child.
Multiple studies have shown that over 80% of mothers with children who experience homelessness have previously been in domestic violence situations. Furthermore, data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services indicates that every year, 1.2 million children under the age of 6 in the United States endure homelessness. It is crucial to recognize that when parents and their children face homelessness, the impact on the child's well-being is profound.
