Our organization recognizes the importance of prioritizing the voices and experiences of the youth we serve. As such, our Board of Directors is first and foremost accountable to the youth, including the South Dakota Youth Action Board (YAB). The YAB is composed of a diverse group of young individuals aged 15-24, who reflect the demographics and challenges faced by young people experiencing homelessness in our region.
Established in July 2020, the South Dakota Youth Action Board (YAB) has rapidly grown to include well over 140 youth by January 2024. This significant participation demonstrates the commitment and engagement of young individuals in addressing youth housing insecurity. The YAB collaborates with various organizations, including the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the South Dakota Housing Development Authority, Continuum of Care, and service providers. Together, we work collectively to develop and implement strategies that effectively address the issue of youth homelessness.
In our State Coordinated Community Plan, we place great importance on incorporating the valuable insights and expertise provided by the YAB. Their input is instrumental in identifying and addressing the challenges faced by at-risk and homeless youth. By actively involving the YAB in our decision-making processes, we ensure that our programs and services are tailored to meet the specific needs of the youth we serve.
Through our collaboration with the YAB, we strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment that empowers young individuals and helps them overcome the obstacles they face. By amplifying their voices and incorporating their perspectives, we can work towards a future where youth homelessness is effectively addressed, and all young people have access to safe and stable housing.
